What's the difference between a consultant and a
know-it-all?

The "know-it-all" focuses on impressing you with their
superior knowledge so they can justify a large fee. They work
alone and in secrecy. When the "know-it-all" presents his
or her report, it seems strange and exotic and probably worth
the money spent on it. No one is sure, though, because no one
really understands the report.
The true consultant is part of your
team. He or she spends 75% of their time listening to your
problems, your goals, your thoughts, and your good and bad
experiences grappling with a particular problem. THEN the
true consultant adds their own experiences, research,
analytical skills, and outsider's point of view to propose
solutions. When the true consultant presents his or her
report, the client says, "Of course! It makes perfect
sense! Why didn't I think of that?" The client knows
they've received real value for their investment.
